Richie Boyens

Portfolio Bio

A scan of Richie Boyen’s Instagram reveals an intuitive creative; a talented photographer with an eye for a stunning landscape, and a fashion designer who can effortlessly meld comfort with chic.

Kiwis may initially recognise the Auckland-based entrepreneur from The 2020 edition of The Bachelorette NZ, which propelled him both into the public eye - and his subsequent romance with Lily McManus.

However Richie was on his own trail-blazing ride well before he made his TV debut. He has always preferred the path less travelled; a true free spirit, he is drawn to the unconventional in all aspects of life.

Born in Napier and raised in Taradale, Richie grew up in a very supportive family; his parents committed to raising their three boisterous boys with enduring self-belief; openness; determination to explore all avenues in becoming their very best, and to be unafraid of failure.

As a result, Richie has explored many aspects of his own creativity as his career has evolved over the past 15 years. He has worked in music promotion and gig-staging; property management; has owned his own studio and worked in art and design.

While living Dunedin, Richie owned and managed a studio, Above Ground - a basement space he set up for his own design work and other talented artists, graphic designers, shoemakers and jewellers. The walls were reserved for graffiti for whomever wanted to express themselves! Richie calls the four years he spent there “ruthless and inspiring.” The countless talent who worked in between those walls helped me grow and learn to appreciate the simple things about design and life.”

And his life’s most enduring passion so far has been for fashion – he is a self-taught clothing designer (he sews his own pieces) who has successfully built and driven his brand, Clothesivemade, for the last 10 years. “It started with making one-off pieces which was more about creating a piece of art which could be worn,” says Richie. “I still keep that ethos, even though my style is ever-changing – it’s about comfort meeting style and attitude. If you feel good in what you wear, no matter what it is, you look good.”

Richie still feels a deep connection with the South Island, and has lived on and off in Wanaka, where he owns a small property management business; the mountains and lakes in this part of NZ also speak to his inner adrenaline junkie – Richie will try “anything that will get my heart racing;” snowboarding, skateboarding – anything to do with speed – but he also loves more zen activities like gardening, photography and ocean swimming.

Richie describes himself as honest, trustworthy, mindful, kind, and as someone who loves to inspire others. One of his purist qualities is that he genuinely likes to see people succeed, especially those closest to him; he calls it “winning together,” and is very committed to working alongside others to extract and execute their ideas for everyone’s benefit and evolution.
